ARTIST STATEMENT...
"I cannot remember a time I was not drawing or painting,
and much of my early artistic activity was drawing with a pencil.
I was fascinated by realism which taught me to look at things very
closely.
Painting brings me great joy. It is very satisfying to be involved
in a process that feeds my heart and my mind. I paint to create
beauty, and my heart is lifted as beauty reveals itself, when it
is born.
My visual imagination is full of images, shapes and colors. I have
spent a lot of time "looking." Like all artists, I am
about putting things together. In the early stages of my paintings,
I have no conscious idea what I am doing. I do not force a preconceived
image upon it. However, I watch very closely, and there comes a
time when the work begins to reveal its own unique vitality. As
I look and listen, I try to have the openness to discover what could
be. The painting is either saying add or take away; it wants to
have more vitality, more power, more light. It is through my mind,
my feelings, my intuition that I begin to discover a painting's
beauty. I resist putting a label on the work. I feel most comfortable
calling it non-representational. I am simply painting, but there
is more and the paintings are about things we don't see but maybe
we would like to see. There is often something familiar in my non-representational
work, and so my paintings begin to be an encounter with something
known and unknown. That is the essence of mystery." - Daniel Watts
DANIEL WATTS paints in oils on wood panels and on canvas where
light seems to filter through crystalline shapes. Watts' dreamy renderings
allow the viewer to both think and feel at the same time. Whether
his paintings suggest a landscape or simply layer upon layer of
floating color and shape, Watts' work grips the viewer with an intensity
and power. Watts once described his work as being like icons because
they afford him a reality in which to mediate.
Born in 1954, Watts received his BFA from Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1980.
