VIEW GOODACRE SCULPTURE

"Olympic Wannabes Project"

"Olympic Wannabes" by internationally renowned sculptor, Glenna Goodacre, has been gifted to the City of Sarasota by residents and friends of Sarasota. This remarkable work of art is on permanent exhibition in downtown Sarasota's Selby Five Points Park at Selby Library.
  • A Dedication Celebration with Glenna Goodacre, the city and its citizens took place at Selby Five Points Park Sunday, February 9, 2003.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County has received donations amounting to $180,000 from more than 240 community friends who made the donation of this joyful sculpture to the City of Sarasota possible. The Community Foundation is accepting tax-deductible gifts of $10 or more to assist with the landscaping expenses.

The Dedication of "Olympic Wannabes" and the installation of the Contributors plaque at Selby Five Points in downtown Sarasota for Sunday took place on February 9, 2003. Glenna Goodacre was in attendance for this major exhibition of her new work.

Ever since its arrival at Galleria Silecchia in November 2000, this carefree rendering of children has touched the hearts of thousands, with people consistently saying that they wanted to see the sculpture installed in the heart of downtown.

Harmonious cooperation between community members, Galleria Silecchia, Glenna Goodacre, The City Planning Department, The Public Art Committee, the City Commission and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, led to the decision to install the sculpture downtown at Selby Library in the locally famous triangular park known as Selby Five Points Park.

Landscaping the area with flowering plants and lighting the sculpture is underway. To be a part of this wonderful community project, please make you tax-deductible donation to the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.

Considered by many as "America's Sculptor," Glenna Goodacre is internationally renowned for her monumental work in bronze, most notably the "Vietnam Women's Memorial" on the National Mall in Washington, DC, the "Irish Famine Memorial" in progress for the City of Philadelphia, and her life size portraits of former Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan. It is also her design of Sacagawea that graces the new United States Golden Dollar.
